My long term research interests are aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of brain plasticity in post-stroke chronic aphasia related to improved behavioral outcomes of therapy to develop more effective treatment strategies for persons with aphasia. Drawing on my background in the disciplines of linguistics, language disorders, and neuroimaging, with special interest in the treatment of semantic deficits, I conduct research with both normal adults and those with language disorders in the areas of semantics and bilingualism. Research to date has included examining plausibility in sentence comprehension in normal and aphasic language processing, treating word-finding deficits in bilingual aphasia, including computational modeling of treatment outcomes, treating syntactic deficits in aphasia, and using neuroimaging in concert with a theoretically-based word-finding treatment for aphasia that utilizes the concreteness effect to promote generalization in order to understand the neural plasticity associated with both direct training and generalization effects of treatment. Ongoing work in the lab utilizes neuroimaging, functional connectivity analyses, and behavioral analyses to understand and promote neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation of adult language disorders in both monolingual and bilingual persons with aphasia.
